Description

Home + History Las Vegas kicks off our inaugural weekend of events with a fundraising reception for Paradise Palms II. The original portion of Paradise Palms is poised to become Clark County's first Historic Neighborhood. Nevada Preservation Foundation is committed to working with each portion of Paradise Palms (almost 1500 homes in total!) to seek Historic Neighborhood status. Help us to kick off both Home + History and this second stage of the Paradise Palms Historic Neighborhood effort!

This second portion of Las Vegas' most famous neighborhood is made up of the homes surrounding the Las Vegas National Golf Course, the heart of the Paradise Palms community. These homes were designed by famous architect duo Palmer & Krisel as well as developers Americana Homes and D.L. Bradley. Notable residents have included actors Max Baer Jr., Foster Brooks, Debbie Reynolds, Peter Lynd Hayes, and Mary Healy, along with entertainers Sonny King, Roger Ray, Shecky Green, Brek Wall and Nancy Austin. The area is also home to the famous house from the movie Casino.

In addition, the Welcome Reception will also feature an exhibit of images from throughout the twenty plus year long career of Las Vegas based photographer Jeff Green. Jeff’s work focuses on architecture and design from the past, most notably from the 1950’s through the late 1970's. Some of the homes and buildings featured in the exhibit are still in use and lovingly cared for today, and some have been left abandoned. Many of them have interesting stories attached from their past owners. Jeff set out to visually capture the beauty inherent in these quickly disappearing structures and create lasting portraits of classic architecture from a timeless era of architecture and design that still very much influences what is done today. In a rapidly changing world of constant new development and progress, architecture from the mid century era is alive and well in some cases. Architecture plays a big role own our lives whether we are fully conscious of it or not. The places that we have lived and spent time in throughout our lives are burned into our memories. "Shooting these images was a side project of mine throughout my career as a commercial and editorial photographer, although some of the shots were done for assignments. I enjoyed photographing and experiencing these places and meeting all the great people along the way".

The reception will be held at the new home of the Nevada Preservation Foundation, the Historic Westside School. This beautifully restored 1923 school along with the 1948 annex have only recently re-opened. A collaboration by the City of Las Vegas and the Westside Neighborhood, this building is a shining example of historic preservation done well.

All proceeds from this event will benefit the Paradise Palms II Historic Neighborhood Campaign.
